"The ASSes" is the eighth episode of Season 3 of Big Mouth. It is the twenty-ninth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
A big standardized test sends everyone into a panic -- except for Jay, who just scored an Adderall prescription.
Plot[]
The episode begins with Jay being interrogated by Detectives Florez and Dumont. During the questioning, Jay reveals his school excuses him from taking the "ASSes", a standardized test, because he does poorly that it brings the school's average down so the school sends Jay to the Zoo while the rest of the students are taking the test. Diane brings Jay to see the doctor who diagnoses him with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and prescribes him Adderall.
Standardized tests are freaking out many for, like in the case of Shannon, they make it seem they will dictate the rest of these 7th graders life. What doesn’t help though is Missy taking things with ease, Andrew freaking out, and Jay’s offer of Adderall which does make Nick jumpy, but he seems focused. Depression Kitty finds Jessi again and tries to lead her back into depression.
The pressure to do well eventually hits Missy, leading to her hitting up Jay and having adverse effects to the Adderal. Then, someone snitched and the cops haul Jay in for selling drugs. Luckily for Jay, his dad bails him out and takes him home.

Trivia[]
- In New York State, the "ASSes" are a real-life standardized tests called the "New York State Testing Program". It is administered to students in Grades 3 to 8. It is meant to see which schools are underperforming or doing well with educating students.
- These tests can also be compared to the New York Regents Examinations that all high schoolers need to take in order to get their dipolomas. This is confirmed by the pressure the main characters were under.
- When Jay told the detectives the school is alright with leaving him behind is a reference to the 2001 federal law "No Child Left Behind".
