—DeVon Furtive-Oldman code switching to "black" in A Very Special 9/11 Episode
| ||
DeVon Furtive-Oldman is a major recurring character. He is an African-American boy who goes to Bridgeton Middle School and the ex-husband of Devin. He was voiced by the late Jak Knight.
Biography[]
DeVon Furtive-Oldman debuts in "Ejaculation", talking about sports with Jay in the locker room and turning into a giant penis.
DeVon returns in "Everybody Bleeds" with his then-girlfriend, Devin. Later on, he gives Nick some relationship advice. DeVon encourages Nick to allow his girlfriend, Jessi to wear the pants in the relationship, much like in his own. DeVon reveals that his real name is pronounced "Deh-Vawn", and only goes by "Deh-Vinn" because Devin forced him to change his name so that their names can match. Nick convinces DeVon to take charge and stand up to his girlfriend and DeVon does just that, demanding her that he henceforth be addressed as "DeVon" only. From then on, DeVon has been addressed by his real name for the rest of the series.
In "A Very Special 9/11 Episode", it is confirmed that DeVon is "old as hell" which had been hinted at previously as the pharmacist in "Steve the Virgin" said he bought arthritis medication. It is not actually known how old he is but he was most likely born before the rest of his classmates.
In "What Is It About Boobs?", DeVon breaks up with Devin after falling in love with Gina solely for her body. DeVon and Gina quickly become boyfriend and girlfriend, much to the envy of not only Devin, but also Nick, who was hoping to go out with Gina.
In "The Shame Wizard" DeVon shares a kiss with Gina as Nick watches from inside a bus.
In "Steve the Virgin", DeVon and Gina went on a double date with Devin and Nick. Devin was hoping to make DeVon jealous so that he would take her back, a plan that worked like a charm. After dumping Gina, she was finally open for Nick to get together with.
In "My Furry Valentine", DeVon had a hard time finding the perfect Valentine's gift for Devin. The first thing he tried to give her was red roses but they were too cliché. He tries to offer a Nintendo Switch gift which received a quick no. Later he gets her a rescue dog but Devin rejects it. At the end of the episode, he proposes to Devin with an engagement ring to which she gladly accepts.
In "Rankings", DeVon was having trouble coping with Devin not being named the hottest girl at Bridgeton Middle School by his male peers. Nick gives him some words of encouragement and says it shouldn't matter what the other guys think. DeVon takes Nick's advice goes on to marry Devin as planned.
Appearance[]
DeVon Furtive-Oldman is a tall and slim African-American teenage boy with a large black afro and dark gray eyes with thick black eyebrows. His usual outfit is a short-sleeve v-neck purple shirt, light green baggy pants, black and white high-top sneakers.
Personality[]
At the start of the show, Devon is generally nice, though is sometimes shown to be shallow and mean. In "What Is It About Boobs?," he breaks up with Devin to go out with Gina, to whom he is seemingly only attracted because of her breasts, showing that he has a somewhat objectifying view of women. In "Steve the Virgin," he and Devin make fun of Nick Birch for having a small penis; him and Devin are revealed to get back together soon after in the episode "Drug Buddies."
Nevertheless, in seasons 3 and 4, his character is more thoroughly developed, and it is shown that he has a nicer side to him. In "A Very Special 9/11 Episode", it is revealed that Devon code-switches and puts on a different persona, based on who he's around. In his words, "It's anybody's guess which one's the real him". At the end of the episode, Missy told him that he was allowed to be himself around her, meaning we could be seeing the true, unfiltered DeVon in future episodes, where he interacts with Missy.
Relationships[]
Friends[]
- Charles Lu - Charles and DeVon seem to be in a good friendship between the two. DeVon also invited him to his bachelor Party in "Rankings".
- Nick Birch - Nick and DeVon has sort of an acquaintance friendship between each other, but they are sometimes seen together. In "Everybody Bleeds", DeVon explained to Nick how his relationship with Devin worked. Nick questioned why DeVon let Devin dominate him like that, which really made DeVon think and eventually decide he should stand up for himself and have a more equal relationship with Devin. In "Rankings", Nick was invited to DeVon's bachelor party and later, his wedding. When DeVon had his typical last-minute reservations about marrying Devin, Nick provided emotional support for his friend and convinced him to marry Devin.
- Andrew Glouberman - DeVon doesn't mind that Andrew can be a bit too far often, but he likes to seem that Andrew is still a good person.
- Missy Foreman-Greenwald - In "A Very Special 9/11 Episode", DeVon consoled Missy after she was insulted by Devin for her new hairstyle. DeVon saw that Missy was struggling with her racial identity, being biracial with a white voice actor and all, and taught her how to be black with a song that explained how code-switching works, when talking to people of different races. DeVon also taught Missy to stand up to Devin and not let her treat her that way, so Missy later publicly dissed Devin in front of everybody, giving herself some more power and self-confidence, which DeVon was really proud of her for. At the end of the day, Missy said that she liked DeVon for who he was and that he didn't need to code switch in front of her and instead just be himself, which DeVon found really refreshing. Missy later hinted at being in love with DeVon.
Love interests[]
- Devin LeSeven - Devon is stated to be dating Devin at the start of the show. As he explained to Nick in "Everybody Bleeds," DeVon lets Devin control his entire life and has even changed his name to "Devin," because Devin thought it would be cute for them to gave the same name and go by the couple name "The Devins." Nick convinced Devon to stand up to her and demand that he be addressed by his real name. In "What Is It About Boobs?", DeVon temporarily broke up with Devin to go out with Gina only to dump Gina and get back together with her in the end. In "My Furry Valentine", Devon gave several Valentine's Day gifts to Devin, all of which she was horribly dissatisfied with. She gave him several "strikes" and threatened to dump him entirely if he doesn't "Dev-istate" her soon. At the end of the episode, Devon successfully Dev-istated Devin by proposing to her. In "Rankings," Devin and DeVon got married, despite them only being children; the legality of their marriage is not clear. DeVon's marriage with Devin continued on and things remained more or less the same between them. In "Cafeteria Girls," it is stated that Devin's parents paid for their honeymoon vacation to Rye Playland. In "A Very Special 9/11 Episode", DeVon is released to have a code switch setting dedicated to Devin and Missy told DeVon that he should stop letting Devin treat him poorly. In "Four Stories About Hand Stuff", DeVon took Devin's advice to heart and filed a divorce with Devin. However, he later reunites with Devin in "I Fucking Hate You," and the two renew their wedding vows in "Re-New Year's Eve."
- Gina Alvarez - In "What Is It About Boobs?", DeVon broke up with Devin to go out with Gina and the two hung out at her place a few times. Devin was jealous and started dating Nick just to get him back. In "Drug Buddies," it is revealed that Devon dumped Gina to get back together with Devin. In "Dark Side of the Boob", Devon states that he is proud of Nick for getting to second base with Gina, saying that even he did not get that far, during the short time he dated her.

Trivia[]
- In "The Shame Wizard," Devon said that his father was never around, which is a reflection of the fact that a large portion of African-American children are only raised by one parent, usually their mother. In his father's absence, his uncle served as his father figure.
- DeVon is afraid of the police (Capiophobia), fearing that they're going to arrest him for being African-American. This is demonstrated in the episodes:
- "The Pornscape" when he put his hands up in the presence of a cop, despite the cop also being African-American.
- "The ASSes" when he dressed up in whiteface to trick Detective Florez and Detective Dumont into thinking he was an un-arrestable white guy.
- DeVon is often jokingly said to be secretly an old man. He suffers from several medical conditions that would normally belong to an old man, such as rheumatoid arthritis, senility and high blood pressure as learned in "Steve the Virgin" and "A Very Special 9/11 Episode."
- In "Graduation", his last name was revealed to be Furtive-Oldman, referencing this joke.
- DeVon's voice actor, Jak Knight died on July 14, 2022, As such, DeVon has quietly been written off the show, no longer appearing in any episodes from season 7, onward, aside from seldom making very brief non-speaking cameos. Although his character is not confirmed to be dead nor is he said to have divorced Devin, Devin is implied to be single in season 8, suggesting that he is no longer with Devin.
- In the series finale, "The Great Unknown," Missy comments that she "misses" Devon, suggesting that he is either dead or does not go to Bridgeton High School.
